An investment in your smile is an investment worth making.
When I was growing up like all children, most children, I went to the dentist on a regular basis, every six months at least for my cleanings, but also I had some other restorative work, some fillings and things like that. It was a different experience back then. Dental offices kind of smelled like a dental office. There were strange sounds. The materials they used were uncomfortable. I remember some situations, I do not know if I was frightened, but I was very uncomfortable as a child going to the dentist. It was not something I looked forward to at all. And lot of adults that we see nowadays, they come in to us with that same memory in their mind, a bad experience as a child, maybe something frightening, something painful, something that they do not want to repeat. Patients come in and tell me I am frightened of you or they might even say “I do not like going to the dentist”. I understand how they feel because I felt the same way. I really did. Now, with new materials, with different types of anesthesia and different types of techniques, we can do procedures more quickly. Sometimes, we can do them without anesthesia at all. Patients do not feel anything. Sometimes we may need to use anesthesia, we can use anesthesia that is the same pH as your body tissue, so you hardly feel it taking effect. It wears off more quickly. Many times, two patients come in and have anxiety about having dental treatment because of past experiences and we can give premedication. Just a small pill that helps them feel very relaxed, very calm. They are alert. They are fully in control but they are not anxious. It makes the procedure easier for them. They can go back to work afterwards or go back home and feel like they can go through the rest of the day feeling good. So many other things that we do to help patients feel comfortable while they are at our office, we have warm blankets that we can give them. When we are done with the procedure, we have a warm moist towel that they can place on their face and put on their hands. It really makes people feel more relaxed. We can use headphones, so they can listen to music and help them feel more calm. Many times, we encourage patients to bring their own CDs of something that is relaxing, something they feel good about. We even let them kick off their shoes, just totally relax while they are here. We want the experience to be very comfortable. I laugh because we even did something with our ceiling, we put the design of leaves on our ceiling so that they have something to look at and almost meditate on while they are having their work done.
For me to make an appointment for the dentist, just to make the appointment, I already get nervous. Second, to drive here and to come in is a very nerve wrecking experience. Here, it is a different environment. It is a pleasant that he has gone to the little details like if you are too cold, they get a blanket for you while you are laying down and waiting and there is even little leaves up on the ceiling.
When I came in for that first day, I was very nervous. You know, it is a big change when you have all your front teeth done at one time and so I came in and Dr. Gilbert walked me through everything again, step by step and as he was doing the work, he would talk to me and explain what he was doing.
They relax you, anything from putting a warm blanket across your body to letting you listen to your favorite Rock ’n’ Roll music or country music, whatever. Dr. Gilbert has a great bedside manner. He talks you through every procedure. He lets you know what is going to take place before anything happens. And so, by the time they are actually beginning the work, you are feeling pretty confident and you know that you are in good hands.
No pain. That was a beauty of it all, because I do not like pain.
I have a feeling that when we overcome that barrier of fear that many patients have, that it can actually lead to a positive chain of events occurring where they begin to care more about their health, their appearance, it can change their whole affect. They seem happier. They smile more. They interact with others better. It can really lead to almost innumerous positive things.
I would not smile. I would always keep my mouth closed. You know, in pictures. In high school, you know, I was never one of the pretty girls if you well because I had my teeth, they were just not something that drew attention to me, you know or if it did, it was in a negative way. But now, since Dr. Gilbert worked magic, I have had my photo taken so many times and, you know, I just cannot keep my mouth shut.
Being a nurse for 37 years, my smile is important to me. Also being a school nurse, I was for the last six years, the kids would come over and tell me “Oh Miss, You have dark teeth, black teeth” and I would say “Oh Honey! They are just old teeth but you be sure to brush them twice a day, so your teeth would not look like mine.” That was really difficult to go through the day because I would go home and I would be in tears in the evening time because the kids said something or I would look at my picture and the teeth were dark and I was just so embarrassed and that is not me, I could not smile. I loved to smile. The first time I saw my new smile, I absolutely thought I died and gone to heaven. I was just so excited. It was like Christmas in July and I was just absolutely delighted. I do not even remember driving home. It was just so exciting for me because I could now smile from ear to ear. People noticed my smile. They now say,” Oh, What is different about you?” I said, “It is my smile. Dr. Gilbert’s smile and thank you for noticing.”
